I draw from tradition and modern technology at Norwegian Star. I use Marr Haven's fine, mule-spun Merino wool yarns and classic Norwegian patterning but knit with all the help I can get from modern technology. I think this gives me--and you--the best of both worlds. My Passap electronic knitting machine makes beautiful fabric more quickly than I ever could by hand. The yarns, traditional designs, and meticulous hand finishing produce garments which will look great and feel wonderful for years to come.

Actually, only the electronic part of my knitting machine is truly modern. Susan Pagoldh points out in Nordic Knitting that "the first machine for knitting socks was constructed in 1589 by the Englishman William Lee, but it was not until the seventeenth century that machine knitting became common" (p. 8). Thanks to a Christmas gift of Annemor Sunblo's books on Norwegian knitting, I have discovered that home knitting machines were popular in Norway quite early!

Visit my gallery of sweaters and hats to see some of the things I have done since starting Norwegian Star in 1996. I can duplicate anything you like there, keep the design but change the colors, or design something completely new just for you. Once we settle on a look and get the sizing information down, I need about two weeks to make, full, and ship your order. Please order early for special occaisons like birthdays or Christmas to ensure delivery when you need it.

I guarantee all my work. If a sweater does not fit correctly or is not what you expected, I will remake it or issue a refund if I get the item back promptly and in good condition. Prices vary with complexity and are posted in each gallery.

Rag Rugs

To put a little variety in my life, I have started making rag rugs. I work with new fabric--thank you Jacquart's and Great Northern Weaving--and tend to make a rug out of all the same material. All rugs are as close to 27" wide as I can get them. The length varies depending on how much material I have. My loom is warped in the Hollywood twill pattern with black and white poly-cotton warp. Twill treadling produces a thick, textured rug with cheverons and "chicken feet" that is very nice for places where you stand a lot. Tabby treadling produces a thinner rug with lengthwise stripes. A tabby rug work well in front of doorways. Twill rugs are $.75 per inch; tabbies are $.50. I also weave heavy, fuzzy rugs from upholstry fabric selvedges. These are $1.00 per inch.

If you have any questions or would like me to make a rug using your fabric (discounts apply here), feel free to click here, or use the email button at the bottom of this page.

Thanks for visiting Norwegian Star. Come back often. Bring your friends.
